My name is Katrina. I’m a San Francisco resident transplanted from a small suburb outside of Washington D.C. Since moving to San Francisco in 2009 I’ve kept myself busy by learning more about cooking and coffee and also obsessively making my apartment as efficient and beautiful as I can. I’m writing to share my explorations and knowledge with you.
I’ve taught myself to cook through experimenting with ingredients. I read cookbooks for inspiration and to gain insight on new ingredients, but rarely cook from a recipe. I’ve learned about raw food preparation and often prepare raw items. Other times I try to cook my food as little as possible. I’ve also made a hobby of baking - substituting and changing recipes until they’re perfect for me. I’m still a novice to cooking but I hope that my explorations will open up new ideas to you.
Coffee is my number one addiction. There are so many nuances to the flavors a coffee bean can have, and so many ways to extract those flavors. Coffee is the perfect mix of food, physics, history and pleasure. There are countless areas to explore with coffee and I’ve only began to think about many of them.
Decorating my apartment consists of making the most basic things look beautiful. My favorite examples are my cleaning supplies: amber glass spray bottles with hand made labels, hand made red-dyed straw broom, repurposed jars for powders and scrubs. My goal is for everything I have to interface with to make me happy from the way my dishes are stacked in my cupboards to what I use to clean up at night.
